#VeeraChandrahasa Review: A Daring Dive into Karnataka’s Soul Rating: 3.5/5

Veera Chandrahasa isn’t just a film — it’s a cultural offering, a cinematic stage for Yakshagana, the vibrant and ancient theatre art form of Karnataka. Directed by Ravi Basrur, known for his high-octane action dramas, this project is a surprising detour — a quieter, more traditional tale told with visual ambition and artistic reverence.

The story of Chandrahasa, portrayed with sincerity by Shithil Shetty Airbail, unfolds like a myth sung through centuries. His performance, steeped in theatrical elegance, feels tailor-made for the film’s stylized approach. Adding weight to the ensemble is a brief yet memorable appearance by Dr. Shivarajkumar, whose screen presence alone lifts the intensity.

Visually, the film excels in replicating the texture of Yakshagana — the colors, the intricate costumes, the choreographed movements, all captured beautifully by Kiran Kumar R. The musical score, with its traditional percussion and chants, immerses the viewer in an unfamiliar but magnetic world.

However, not all creative choices land successfully. The film makes accessible use of AI technology, especially in certain background visuals and transitions. While it’s commendable in ambition, the execution often feels disjointed — lacking finesse and failing to blend seamlessly with the film’s traditional aesthetic. Instead of enhancing the experience, the AI elements occasionally pull you out of it.

The pacing also falters in the second half, where the story lingers longer than necessary, possibly to showcase the cultural format more than drive the narrative.

Final Verdict:

Veera Chandrahasa is an earnest attempt to bring folk art to the forefront of mainstream cinema. It may not appeal to everyone, especially those expecting a polished, fast-paced drama. But for those open to experiencing a film rooted in tradition, bold in its vision, and unique in its storytelling — this is a must-watch.

Watch it if: You admire cinema that embraces culture and tradition.
Skip it if: You’re expecting a massy entertainer or high-end VFX spectacle.
